2015 Roussanne

Roussanne is a notoriously difficult grape to grow, and it had a heyday in 2015. It clearly thrives on schadenfreude, watching its hapless neighbors succumb to the vagaries of drought, and frost, more drought, and more frost. Don at the GLENROSE may have discovered the secret to growing great Roussanne - surround it with suffering. The GLENROSE itself is a unique west Paso Robles spot, with a dozen or so unusual varieties growing in the whitest earth I’ve ever seen, with Old World terraces, sun-baked slopes, and plenty of dogs. Attention to detail is crucial here. To the wine: Bold, with a perfumed nose of white flowers and honeyed fig, laced with fennel fronds and Tonga vanilla. Moderate weight on the palate, both oily and tonic. The finish is remarkably clean, dominated by the GLENROSE’s signature minerality.
